Kelantan Set-up for The New Agriculture

Kota Bharu-Menteri Besar Kelantan explained this new situation when officiating The National Seminar on Ninth Malaysia Plan: The New Agriculture, Hope and Reality at a hotel here, last December.

The seminar was organised by Kelantan State Government co-operated with PAS Agriculture, Farmer and Fisherman Beureu. The Chairman of The Committe of Agriculture and Village Industry, Dr. Nik Mazian Nik Mohamad also attended.

Dato’ Nik Abdul Aziz confirms that Kelantan will continues developing agriculture as a major economic sector.

Agriculture sector contributes 17 to 18 percents to Kelantan Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This amount higher than the national contribution; 10 to 11 percents.

“We hope to improve this situation and gain the agriculture contribution to state economic. In order to achieve the objective, several suggestion are remarks,” he said.

Put a serious attention, a solid focus to gain activities and to improve agricultural productivity.

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) had declared the world has changed from Green Revolution to Evergreen Revolution.

This means that the whole world returns to green.

FAO has listed four important elements in the revolution:

(1) The changing from basic agriculture which is based on one type of comodity to multiple crops. The new agriculture cannot depend on one type of crop but the integration of multiple crops, livestocks and the other sources.

(2) The changing approach from ‘top down’ ( an order from higher rank to lower rank) to ‘bottom up’( a close cooperation between farmers) approach. Farmers are no longer to be ordered, but their opinions could be count and cooperations and relations between themselves are most important in encouraging the agricultural activities.

(3) The changing of an old methode to a new technology methode. Technology here means biotechnology. This technology promised a great changing in agriculture sector.

The Kelantan State Government has launch the biotechnology programmes which is called Kelantan Biotech Corporation Sdn. Bhd. This company handle by Kelantan Menteri Besar Board.
‘Kelantan Bioprocessing Center’ will be built soon to improve state agricultural productivities to boost for the global market.

(4) The changing from damaging and peril environment methode to environmental friend methode. Reducing in chemical fertilizer and peptiside usage. We need environmental friend methode because we need fresh, clean and healthy food, fresh air, save and comfortable environment.

Civilization begins with agriculture.

According to Islamic perspective, agriculture is one of the important and noble activity because with the agriculture, human civilization can be built. Man need food and food can be produce from agricultural activities.

In Al-Quran there are more than 200 ayah(sentences) telling about agriculture.

Al Quran described how two tribes before Islamic civilization practised agriculturing and trading as their main activitiy. Saba’ people practising agriculture in a very sophisticated way in their era.

They have very huge orchards, they have very long miles irrigation to provide water to the orchards, a very big dam to stagnant water.

Even their civilizations had reached to the highest skill, unfortunately these tribes were destroyed by Allah swt because of their arrogant and denied the messengers of Allah.

Country GDP goes down.

Malaysia is a hard core agriculture country, but unfortunately, after 50 years of independence, agricultural activities and its contributions to country economics goes down.

In 1957, the agricultural contribution to GDP about 46%. This percentage goes shrinking to 23% in 1980 and deeply shrink to 7-8% in 2005.

In the consequences of that, this country now facing serious food deficit balance of trade. In 1995 the deficit valued RM3.3 billion, in 2005 it sharpen to RM12.6 billion.

Eventhough the progressing of comodity estate as rubber, palm oil and cocoa, but we cannot disregard traditional agriculture based on food as grain rice, vegetables, fruits, livestocks and fishery.
